Oracle launched version 11g of its Oracle Business Intelligence offering on Wednesday, the result of three years of work integrating technologies acquired with the buyouts of companies such as Siebel and Hyperion.

The product offers an environment for accessing relational, online analytical processing and XML data sources. It also improves integration with Oracle tools such as Essbase and Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g, Oracle said in its announcement. Essbase, a multi-dimensional database management system, was acquired with Hyperion in 2007.

Key to Oracle’s strategy with the product is the integration of different business intelligence tools to give a coherent overall picture, the company said.

Oracle is releasing a huge number of security patches to its customers today, addressing flaws in hundreds of its products.

The 59 patches in the “critical patch update” fall across products ranges from the Oracle Database – 13 fixes – Fusion Middleware – seven fixes – Applications – 16 fixes – and Enterprise Manager Grid Control – one fix.

However, the most fixes are for the Solaris product suite, acquired by Oracle when it bought out Sun Microsystems in January this year.

“Seven of these vulnerabilities may be remotely exploitable without authentication, i.e. may be exploited over a network without the need for a username and password,” warned a security advisory from the company.

“Due to the threat posed by a successful attack, Oracle strongly recommends that customers apply Critical Patch Update fixes as soon as possible.”

The large patch by Oracle has filled the whole left by Adobe which would have normally conducted its quarterly patch today. However it had to bring the patch forward to the end of June after critical flaws were found in its Acrobat and Reader products.

Major Oracle BI Launch Next Month

IDG News Service — Oracle (ORCL) is planning to release one of the most significant updates to its BI (business intelligence) platform in years at a July 7 event in London, according to the company’s Web site.

Company President Charles Phillips and Thomas Kurian, executive vice president of product development, will deliver presentations at the event.

Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) 11g will include improvements in analytic processing, reporting, scalability, performance and system management, according to the blog post. The release also delivers an “unrivaled” end-user experience, according to Oracle.

A rundown of breakout sessions planned for the event provides further clues to the release’s feature set, which appears to foster tight connectivity between BI and ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems.

Attendees can learn about an “industry-first innovation that connects business intelligence directly to your business processes,” according to a statement. “You can spot an opportunity or issue, and immediately initiate appropriate action directly from your dashboard.”

Oracle has indicated that its next-generation Fusion Applications, which are supposed to surface this year after a long delay, will incorporate pervasive BI capabilities.

Users have been hotly anticipating the OBIEE 11g product launch, with some even participating in a betting page on the general availability date.

Oracle’s announcement does not specifically state such a date, although it would presumably closely coincide with the launch event. An Oracle spokeswoman declined to comment.

The product should live up to the hype, with “game-changing” enhancements that no other vendors have, said Forrester Research analyst Boris Evelson.

Evelson declined to elaborate further, citing a nondisclosure agreement with Oracle.

Oracle’s Fusion suite of business applications will go on sale in 2010, chief executive Larry Ellison confirmed in his final keynote at Oracle OpenWorld 2009 today.

The Fusion suite will tie together the most important product portfolios Oracle has acquired in recent years, and make them available via the cloud or on premise.

The products will be given updates, and new applications are on the way, Ellison explained at the customer and partner event.

“The Fusion applications will contain replacement applications, and then brand new applications that you might want to add to products such as the Oracle E-Business Suite or PeopleSoft, ” he said.

Ellison added that Fusion will co-exist with Oracle’s current applications, so customers would not feel pressured to upgrade.

“We will make it easy for Fusion applications to be easily integrated with applications such as E-Business suite, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft and Siebel, and continue to make large investments in our existing applications,” he said.

“We know that not all customers will replace their current applications with Fusion, and that most are likely to augment.

“We’re a pretty big software company, so we can afford to build the next generation of applications as well as maintain the old ones. So, as a customer, you can move if you want to, when you want to.”

Ellison explained that the first version of Fusion will not contain the same functionality as software such as E-Business suite, but that more will be added over time.

Applications ready for 2010 include: financial management, human capital management, sales and marketing, supply chain management, project portfolio management and procurement. A business intelligence (BI) add-on will also be available, although Ellison said that BI is to be at the heart of all Fusion applications.

“The user interface is BI driven. In fact you can’t use the interface without BI,” he said.

Ellison also said that, when providing Fusion applications via the cloud, the company will monitor the service levels it commits to with customers.

“We have built this monitoring into enterprise support to prove that we will deliver the service levels we have committed to,” he concluded.

Oracle unveils new version of EPM system

Adds ERP Integrator module to its Hyperion Financial Data Quality Management

Oracle has launched Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) System Release 11.1.1.3, which combines performance management and Business Intelligence (BI) to support strategic, financial and operational management processes.

According to Oracle, the new release adds Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Integrator module for Oracle Hyperion Financial Data Quality Management that integrates the E-Business Suite General Ledger and PeopleSoft Enterprise General Ledger metadata directly into Hyperion Financial Management and Hyperion Planning applications, and supports bi-directional data integration for financial budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.

The EPM System Release 11.1.1.3, a component of Oracle Fusion Middleware, delivers enhancements and integrations spanning simulations, data visualisation and enhanced calculation management capabilities, the company said.

Oracle said that the new offering also features enhanced integration between Oracle Essbase and Oracle Crystal Ball, a spreadsheet-based application for predictive modeling, forecasting, Monte Carlo simulation and optimisation. This integration enables inline simulation within the hyperion smart view for excel interface, which allows end users to view, import, manipulate, distribute and share hyperion application and Essbase data in Microsoft Excel.

Bill Guilmart, vice president of EPM product management at Oracle, said: “The introduction of the ERP Integrator module significantly strengthens the integration between the Oracle E-Business Suite and PeopleSoft Enterprise with Hyperion applications. With the module making metadata and data integration simpler, customers can extend their ERP investments while improving their reporting, analysis and planning cycles.”

QlikView for iPhone Delivers First and Only Interactive Business Intelligence App for iPhone Users

QlikTech, the world’s fastest-growing Business Intelligence (BI) company, recently announced the immediate availability of QlikView for iPhone, the very first truly interactive mobile BI app built specifically for the iPhone. Unlike Oracle’s mobile BI offering that features a rigid interface and limited functionality, QlikView for iPhone fully leverages iPhone’s multitouch and GPS features to deliver QlikView’s renowned, industry-defining interactive capabilities. The result is a groundbreaking app that puts the power of sophisticated, real-time business answers in the hands of mobile users worldwide. It can be downloaded for free from Apple’s Mobile App Store on iTunes.

Product Highlights:

Interactive – click through line items on a list box or chart to get to answers, going deep into regional or product data.

Coverflow –flip through relevant business analysis, make a new selection and those changes are instantly reflected throughout.

GPS-enabled – automatically delivers local customer sales, service or inventory data as reps approach a customer or supplier facility.

Feature-rich – use Search, Bookmark and Shake to Erase

Smarter, Faster, Real-Time Interactive Analysis
Mobile professionals need access to comprehensive, real-time information, not static reports that lack detail from offerings like Oracle’s mobile BI tool. With QlikView for iPhone, salespeople can drill deep into accounts and get granular, up-to-the minute answers and analysis that help them do their job better. From specific customer or product data, down to a single SKU or employee name, QlikView for iPhone gets users what they need, the moment they need it.

“We comprehensively surveyed the BI mobile landscape and it was clear all previous attempts at addressing user needs failed miserably,” said Anthony Deighton, SVP Product, QlikTech. “Just posting a static report on a mobile screen, as Oracle’s solution does, may be marginally helpful, but creates a tremendously frustrating user experience, leaving no opportunity to interact with the data. With QlikView for iPhone, users get a mobile view of a relevant data subset, as well as access to the specific answers they seek. This interactive dynamic is the only way to truly fulfill the promise of mobile BI.”

The Only Mobile BI Tool with Multitouch, Coverflow and GPS Integration
QlikView for iPhone takes full advantage of the iPhone’s native interface. The entire application is multitouch driven with complete implementation of the iPhone finger gestures users are accustomed to. Simple finger-swipes and finger-pinches enable users to select, interact and drill down into data. And to clear selections, all users have to do is shake the device. Apple’s popular 3-D Coverflow feature is also enabled, allowing users to “flip” through analyses in the same way they would through album covers and artists in iTunes. Real-time data changes are also instantly reflected in every Coverflow chart.

In addition, QlikView for iPhone uses GPS to create location-aware reports. For instance, road warriors can use QlikView for iPhone to automatically pull up a data view of a specific supplier, branch office or distributor as they arrive for any site-related visit. And when sales professionals need to get up to speed on an account before a meeting, they no longer have to start from a list of the 250 accounts in the region. Instead, the iPhone will know where they are located and get swift answers for the account they are walking into.

The First App to Deliver on the Promise of Mobile BI
As the worlds of serious business applications and personal productivity devices merge, QlikView for iPhone is a perfect crossover. QlikView for iPhone is a powerful go-to source for the Google generation—people who want and expect their business answers to always be within arm’s reach.

“QlikView for iPhone tears down the boundaries between mobile and desktop BI,” said Deighton. “For years, mobile users have imagined having the ability to get up-to-the-minute data on a company’s sales, inventory or finances. QlikView for iPhone makes this a reality. Once users get a taste of real-time access to valid, specific business answers, there’s no going back.”

If you would like a demo of this stunning technology please get in touch now.
